Video showing how to promote holiday spirit by seasoning mulled wine using a rotating bed reactor. Assorted spices and sugar were used to transform white wine mixed with a clear liquor into a festive and flavourful Christmas drink. The temperature of the mixture was kept at 70°C and the outside temperature at -6°C, using a heating jacket and a northern latitude, respectively.

Selected spices (ginger, orange zest, clove, cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, cardamom) were loaded into a SpinChem® S3 Plus rotating bed reactor (RBR) and extracted into a mixture of white wine (750 mL, 13% (v/v)) and liquor (50 mL, 37.5% (v/v)). The reaction was carried out at 70°C and 500 rpm, within a SpinChem® V3 flower-baffled reaction vessel, during which granulated sucrose (90 g) was added to the reaction mixture. Samples were extracted after lunch and enjoyed together with gingerbread cookies and classic, Swedish Lussebullar.
Computational fluid dynamics simulations is an important tool in the optimization of geometries during development of SpinChem® rotating bed reactor (RBR) products. The image shows velocity vectors in a cross section of the flow around a SpinChem® RBR, in a flower baffled reaction vessel, simulated using ANSYS Fluent software under typical laboratory conditions.
Conditions: The flow was simulated in ANSYS Fluent 17.1 using the steady MRF model at 500 rpm and the SST k-omega turbulence model on a mesh of 0.96 million elements. All dimensions used was identical to the SpinChem® RBR S221 and closely matched the SpinChem® flower baffled reaction vessel V221.

Manufactured in 316L stainless steel with a stainless steel mesh and having a calculated internal volume of 7.8 litres. Outer dimensions, excluding shaft holder, are 254 mm in diameter and 184 mm in height.
The soon-to-be launched cartridge for SpinChem® rotating bed reactor (RBR) will make solid phase material handling with the RBR even more convenient. This video shows the product development and includes screen shots of the CAD modelling, a time lapse of the 3D printing process plus a preview of the final product placed into the RBR.
Conditions: A fused deposition modelling 3D printer was used to construct a cartridge for the RBR S221. The cartridge placed into the RBR was injection molded and equipped with filters.
