Let’s Resolve Hunger Together

"End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”

Food production and consumption are the most significant threats to nature today and at the same time hunger remains a central challenge for mankind. Also, infectious diseases are on the rise, and unhealthy diets exacerbate the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Over the last 15 years, humanity has made significant progress in its fight against hunger. Despite this, research shows that more than 790 million people worldwide are still suffering from hunger. Clearly more needs to be done. Understanding the need and urgency, the UN set the reduction of hunger as Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2).

What is SDG 2?

SDG 2 was drafted with the aim of eliminating hunger. The goal was set such that it ends all forms of malnutrition and hunger by 2030 and ensures that everyone has enough to eat. SDG 2 lays a foundation to sustain the world's population and ensure that nobody will ever suffer from hunger. According to the SDG 2 statement it is not just essential to increase food production but also to likewise decrease food loss and waste.

To achieve this, it is important to promote sustainable agriculture, establish fair distribution systems and improve food processing with modern technologies, including innovations like the rotating bed reactor. By driving a global conversation about food and hunger issues and by prioritzing capacities to resolve them, humanity can deliver tangible results that will allow to sustain every life.

Examples of the use of the rotating bed reactor in related applications:

  1. Omega-3 fish oil production via a transesterification reaction (triglycerides to, e.g., ethyl fatty esters). Find more examples here.
  2. Pesticide remediation from citrus oil, vegetable oils or plant extracts.
  3. Sugar hydrolysis and processing by biocatalytic means using an invertase.
